Underground Fuel Storage System Decommissioning in Perth

Expert Decommissioning and Certification of Underground Fuel Infrastructure

Perth, Western Australia

When it comes to decommissioning underground fuel storage systems, there is no room for shortcuts. Strict compliance with OHS requirements and Australian Environmental Standards is essential, and the consequences of getting it wrong can be significant, both financially and environmentally. Handy Fuel WA was engaged by a Perth property owner to decommission an underground fuel storage system that had been in place for several decades and was no longer in use. The project required careful planning, specialist equipment, and full certification on completion.

The whole process was handled professionally from start to finish. Handy Fuel WA managed everything and gave us the documentation we needed for our development application. We wouldn't have known where to start without them.

Tank Decommissioning

The underground tank had been dormant for a number of years following a change in the property's operations. With a redevelopment planned for the site, the decision was made to formally decommission and remove the tank rather than leave it in place, which can create ongoing liability for property owners.

Handy Fuel WA carried out an initial site assessment to determine the tank's location, size, construction type, and current condition. Ground-penetrating assessment confirmed the tank's position and the team planned the excavation and removal methodology in line with the relevant Australian Standards and local authority requirements.

Prior to excavation, the tank was purged and made safe in accordance with OHS requirements. All residual fuel and sludge was removed and disposed of through a licensed waste contractor, with documentation provided to the client confirming compliant disposal.

Excavation was carried out to expose the tank, which was then inspected for structural integrity and any signs of leakage. Soil samples were taken from around the base and sides of the tank to test for hydrocarbon contamination. Results were assessed and reported as part of the overall project documentation.

The tank was then removed from site, cleaned, cut, and processed by a licensed facility. On completion, Handy Fuel WA provided the client with a full decommissioning report and certificate, covering all works carried out, waste disposal records, soil sample results, and confirmation that the site had been remediated to the required standard.

This certification is a critical document for property owners, particularly those planning to sell or redevelop, as it demonstrates that the underground fuel infrastructure has been professionally and compliantly removed.
